This is a series of Illustrations made from the movie Raise the Red Lanterns. The story happened in the period of the Republic of China nearly 100 years ago. In a traditional wealthy family, a master's wife and his three concubines were fighting for his love and privilege in the house.
Song-Lian, who used to be a female college student, has to marry an old man as his concubine because her family went bankrupt that her stepmother needs Song-Lian's bride price to pay the debt. However, once she enters the family, her value as an independent person is gone. They treated her as an offspring producer and master's plaything rather than a person with high education. This enormous clash of world view eventually drives her crazy.
